Installing an eSIM on your iPhone has never been simpler. In this step-by-step guide, we walk you through activating your GoDataTravel eSIM on all compatible iPhone models — in less than 5 minutes.

Compatible iPhone Models

eSIM technology is available on all iPhones starting from the iPhone XS (2018). Here is the complete list:

⚠️
iPhone purchased from a carrier?

If your iPhone is under contract or carrier-locked (Bell, Rogers, Videotron, etc.), you must have it unlocked before using a third-party eSIM. Contact your carrier — it's free at the end of your contract.

Step-by-step installation

Make sure you have your GoDataTravel email with the QR code open on a separate device (computer or tablet) — you'll need it to scan with your iPhone.

  1. 1
    Open iPhone Settings

Tap the ⚙️ Settings icon on your home screen.

  2. 2
    Go to "Cellular"
    Settings → Cellular

On some iPhones it may be called "Mobile Data" depending on your region.

  3. 3
    Tap "Add eSIM Plan"
    Cellular → Add eSIM Plan

Or "Add Data Plan" depending on your iOS version.

  4. 4
    Scan the GoDataTravel QR code

Your iPhone activates its camera. Point it at the QR code shown on your other device. The code is recognized automatically in a few seconds.

  5. 5
    Confirm activation

Tap "Continue" then "Add Data Plan". Your eSIM is now installed on your iPhone!

  6. 6
    Activate eSIM upon arrival

The eSIM is installed but activate it only when you arrive at your destination so the validity period starts at the right time.

Settings → Cellular → [Your GoDataTravel eSIM] → Turn On
Dual SIM tip

After installation, enable "Cellular Data" on your GoDataTravel eSIM and keep your main SIM for calls and texts. You'll have both active at the same time!

iPhone 14 and newer — iOS 16+

On recent iPhones running iOS 16 and above, Apple has made the process even simpler:

eSIM-only option (iPhone 14 USA)

iPhones 14 sold in the United States are eSIM-only — there is no physical SIM tray. Installation is done entirely through the Settings menu, without a QR code in some cases (automatic activation via your Apple account if your carrier supports it).

eSIM transfer between iPhones

If you switch iPhones, you can transfer some eSIMs directly from one device to another via Bluetooth, without using the QR code. Note that GoDataTravel eSIMs are single-use — they cannot be transferred.

Common issues and solutions

QR code not recognized

Make sure your screen is bright enough, the distance is correct (15-20 cm) and the QR code is fully displayed. Try zooming in slightly on the QR code on your screen.

The "Add eSIM Plan" option doesn't appear

Your iPhone may be carrier-locked. Go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If you see "No SIM restrictions" you're free. Otherwise, contact your carrier.

eSIM is installed but won't connect

Disable then re-enable the eSIM in Settings → Cellular. If the issue persists, restart your iPhone. Also check that you are in a country covered by your GoDataTravel plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install multiple eSIMs on my iPhone?
Yes! An iPhone can store up to 8 eSIMs, but only one can be active at a time for data. You can switch the active eSIM depending on which country you're traveling in.
Is the eSIM deleted if I reset my iPhone?
Yes, a factory reset deletes all installed eSIMs. GoDataTravel eSIMs are single-use — you won't be able to reinstall it. Avoid resetting your iPhone while traveling.
Do I need to remove my physical SIM to use the eSIM?
No! That's the whole advantage of eSIM. Keep your main SIM in place for calls and texts, and use the GoDataTravel eSIM for data while traveling.
Does my eSIM work in airplane mode?
In airplane mode, all connections are cut, including the eSIM. In airplane mode settings, you can individually re-enable only Wi-Fi or cellular data if needed.
